Haiku, anyone?

Anyone else enjoy haiku?

If you're new to haiku, it's a three line poem. The first line has five syllables, the second seven, and the third five.

The tradition is for haiku to reference nature, but modern haiku can be about any subject.

Haiku obsession
Why do you torture me so?
Always one word short.

Fun! Thanks for posting this idea, and
your haiku offering further illuminates
the nature of the prompt. Very clever.
I'll have to give this one some thought
and post some of my own.

To reveal the hidden self

Finally my head has cleared so I can do
this! I know Haiku doesn't typically have
multiple stanzas, but they kept coming.
Here goes...

Squirrel Haiku

Does he see me see
him dig his secret dinner
from my grass and smile?

How to plant seeds so
they feast me but do not grow?
Maybe the nut knows.

He dances the dirt
as at my window I spy--
this watch, the day's gift.

I love the vivid image you've painted! I can just see the narrator watching out his/her window. My favorite line is the one about "his secret dinner". It totally captures how squirrels are jumpy and secretive about their stashes of food.

I always love the recognition of cycles.
Here it is the green of summer giving way
to the gold of the hidden self--very
evocative and TRUE. We ARE a cycle, each
season revealing, if we are lucky, its
own reward, though (for my own part) we
don't always see it that way at first.

Big river rolls by
Mossy oaks dance in warm breeze
The bayou awaits

"The bayou awaits" is full of such
mystery. The swamp, whether it's in New
Orleans or Indiana, is full of such
potential for life. There is such an
expectancy in these few lines, an
anticipation...
